This is the number one complaint for those that live near the Turkey Tracks shooting area. On some weekends shooting can get to a volume of a hundred or more rounds per minute, starting sometimes before dawn and extending past dark.
From a ½ mile to 3 miles from the proposed range are three residential subdivisions (West Creek, Trout Creek, Ridgewood), three resort/hospitality businesses (Rainbow Falls, Pikes Peak Resort, Thunder Butte Lodge), and numerous scattered private parcels of land. The shooting noise affects over 300 residents and businesses in this area. We would like for the forest service to consider the population density in the vicinity of the proposed shooting range.
As per the forest service management plan, Turkey Tracks is currently a high usage range. On any given weekend there are hundreds of dispersed shooters scattered across the Pikes Peak Ranger District. Once much of the forest is closed to dispersed shooting, recreational shooters will be funneled into Turkey Tracks.
Turkey Tracks is partially developed for target shooting with 10-12 ranges. Conflicts are going to arise when there is not the capacity to handle the demand. With some groups travelling over an hour to get to the range, they will end up spilling over on FR 343 to the west in to West Creek and surrounding areas.
The forest service has done some development work in Turkey Tracks to create 10-12 dedicated shooting lanes, fenced areas to restrict shooting, and earthen berms for back stops. Even with these improvements, problems still exist.

The volume of trash left behind by target shooters is multitudes higher than all other forest usages combined.
The shooting range has a direct impact on home/property values. Property values are sure to decline as the shooting range usage goes up.
Prospective buyers are sure to be dissuaded from purchasing a home near a poorly managed shooting range and from which frequent gunfire can be heard. On the flip side, a well-managed and sound mitigated range could potentially have a positive impact on property values.
